Composer Alex Weston is reteaming with director Lulu Wang on the upcoming Amazon limited series Expats. The show is written and directed by Wang and stars Nicole Kidman, Brian Tee, Sarayu Blue, Jack Huston, Ruby Ruiz, Ji-young Yoo, Amelyn Pardenilla, Bonde Sham, Flora Chan and Maggie Lee. The 6-part drama is based on Janice Y.K. Lee’s bestselling novel The Expatriates and follows an American family who have moved to Hong Kong and established a community of fellow expatriates, which is fractured after a sudden family tragedy impacts their intersecting lives. Wang and Kidman are also executive producing the Amazon Studios production with Alice Bell (Suburban Mayhem), Daniele Melia (Winner), Per Saari (Big Little Lies, Love & Death), Stan Wlodkowski (One Hour Photo, Slums of Beverly Hills) and Theresa Park (Bones and All, After Yang). Weston (Wander Darkly, The Novice, Goodnight Mommy) has previously scored Wang’s 2019 feature The Farewell. A first episode of Expats will screen this month at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival and the full series is expected to premiere in a couple of months on Prime Video.
Weston’s other recent projects include Dustin Guy Defa’s The Adults, which just opened in select U.S. theaters last month.
