Nigerian composer Ré Olunuga (Girl, Up North, Coming from Insanity) has recently scored the upcoming Disney+ original event series Iwájú. The show marks the first collaboration between Walt Disney Animation Studios and Pan-African entertainment company Kugali and features the voices of Simisola Gbadamosi, Dayo Okeniyi, Siji Soetan, Femi Branch, and Weruche Opia. The 6-parter is set in a futuristic Lagos, Nigeria and tells the coming-of-age story of a young girl from the wealthy island and her best friend as they discover the secrets and dangers hidden in their different worlds. Adeola and Halima Hudson wrote the screenplay. Disney Animation’s Christina Chen is producing the project. Olunuga has previously scored the Disney+ live-action movie Rise. Iwájú will premiere on February 28, 2024 exclusively on Disney+.
Olunuga has also recently scored Anthony Chen’s drama Drift (starring Cynthia Erivo & Alia Shawkat), which premiered at last year’s Sundance Film Festival and is set to be released in U.S. theaters on February 9 by Utopia.
