Composer Alexandre Desplat (The Shape of Water, The Grand Budapest Hotel, The Queen, The King’s Speech, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows) is set to reteam with director Greta Gerwig on the upcoming comedy Barbie. The film based on the Mattel property stars Margot Robbie in the role, alongside Ryan Gosling, Will Ferrell, Simu Liu, Kate McKinnon, Alexandra Shipp, Emma Mackey and America Ferrera. No plot details have been announced yet. Gerwig (Lady Bird) also co-wrote the screenplay with Noah Baumbach (Marriage Story, The Squid and the Whale). Robbie is producing the project with LuckyChap’s Tom Ackerley (I, Tonya, Promising Young Woman), Mattel Films’ Robbie Brenner (Dallas Buyers Club, Escape Room), as well as David Heyman (Harry Potter series, Gravity, Paddington). Desplat has previously scored Gerwig’s last directorial effort, Little Women. Barbie is set to be released in theaters on July 21, 2023 by Warner Bros. Pictures.
Among Desplat’s other upcoming and recent projects include Guillermo del Toro’s animated movie Pinocchio, Stephen Frears’ The Lost King, Roman Polanski’s The Palace, Wes Anderson’s Asteroid City, Michel Hazanavicius’ The Most Precious of Cargo and Rebecca Miller’s She Came to Me.
Aside from being a welcome addition to the crew (especially having worked well with Gerwig on her adaptation of Little Women), this is still just getting more interesting than I’d ever thought was possible for a freaking Barbie movie of all things.
