Dan Romer (Luca, Beasts of the Southern Wild, Maniac, Beasts of No Nation, Wendy) has teamed up with Justin Paul to compose the underscore for the film adaptation of the stage musical Dear Evan Hansen. The film is directed by Stephen Chbosky (Wonder, The Perks of Being a Wallflower) and stars Ben Platt, Kaitlyn Dever, Amandla Stenberg, Julianne Moore, Amy Adams, Nik Dodani, Colton Ryan and Danny Pino. The movie is based on the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical of the same title written by Steven Levenson (with music and lyrics by Benj Pasek & Paul) and revolves around an isolated high schooler aching for understanding and belonging amid the chaos and cruelty of the social-media age. Levenson also wrote the screenplay. Marc Platt (La La Land, Bridge of Spies) and Adam Siegel (Drive, 2 Guns) are producing the project. Dear Evan Hansen will be released in theaters nationwide on September 24 by Universal Pictures. Visit the official movie website for updates.

Romer’s other recent feature projects include Jonas Carpignano’s A Chiara (co-scored with Benh Zeitlin), which premiered last month at the Cannes Film Festival and has been picked up by Neon for domestic distribution. The composer also continues to score ABC’s The Good Doctor, which will return for its fifth season on September 27 and The CW’s Superman & Lois, which just finished its first season run and will return for a second season in 2022. He is also co-scoring HBO Max’s Love Life and Hulu’s Ramy, which will come back for new seasons.
