Video Game creative director Neil Druckmann announced on Twitter that Gustavo Santaolalla (Brokeback Mountain, Babel, 21 Grams, The Motorcycle Diaries, The Book of Life) is attached to compose the music for the upcoming HBO original series The Last of Us. The show based the PlayStation video game of the same title developed by Naughty Dog, which takes place twenty years after modern civilization has been destroyed and follows a hardened survivor who is hired to smuggle a 14-year-old girl, out of an oppressive quarantine zone. Craig Mazin (Chernobyl, The Hangover Part II & III) is writing the TV show and will also executive producing the Sony Pictures Television production with Druckmann, Carolyn Strauss (Game of Thrones, Treme) and Naughty Dog president of game development Evan Wells. Santaolalla has scored the original 2013 The Last of Us video game, as well as its sequel, which will be released on May 29, 2020. The Last of Us TV series is currently in development.
Santaolalla also continues to co-score Netflix’s Narcos: Mexico and also has the Spanish Amazon original series El Cid coming up.
