Jeff Russo has been confirmed as the composer of the upcoming CBS All Access original series Star Trek: Picard. The show stars Patrick Stewart as Jean-Luc Picard, which he played for seven seasons on Star Trek: The Next Generation and several movies, including Star Trek Generations, First Contact, Insurrection and Nemesis. Isa Briones, Santiago Cabrera, Michelle Hurd, Alison Pill, Harry Treadaway and Evan Evagora are co-starring in the drama, which will follow Picard into the next chapter of his life. Alex Kurtzman (Star Trek Into Darkness, Now You See Me), Michael Chabon (John Carter, Wonder Boys), Akiva Goldsman (A Beautiful Mind, I Am Legend), James Duff (The Closer), Heather Kadin, Rod Roddenberry, Trevor Roth and Stewart are executive producing the CBS Television Studios production. Russo (Fargo, Legion, The Night Of, The Act, The Umbrella Academy) is also scoring the streaming platform’s Star Trek: Discovery and also composed the music for the first four episodes of Star Trek: Short Treks. A soundtrack album featuring the composer’s music from Season 2 of Star Trek: Discovery was released last week by Lakeshore Records. Star Trek: Picard is set to premiere in early 2020 on CBS All Access.
Russo’s other upcoming projects also include Noah Hawley’s feature Lucy in the Sky starring Natalie Portman, as well as the fourth season of FX’s Fargo.
Really hoped for someone else (or several composers) to tackle this one. Russo is a capable composer, but his music for “Discovery” never really grabbed me.
