89th Academy Awards Nominations Announced

oscars9 This morning, the nominations for the 89th Academy Awards were announced. Academy Awards for outstanding film achievements of 2016 will be presented on Oscar Sunday, February 26, 2017, at the Dolby Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center® and televised live on the ABC Television Network. Here are the music-related nominations:

Best Original Score:

  • Jackie – Mica Levi
  • La La Land – Justin Hurwitz
  • Lion – Dustin O’Halloran & Hauschka
  • Moonlight – Nicholas Britell
  • Passengers – Thomas Newman

Best Original Song:

  • Audition From La La Land, Music by Justin Hurwitz, Lyrics by Benj Pasek & Justin Paul
  • Can’t Stop the Feeling From Trolls, Music & Lyrics by Max Martin, Shellback & Justin Timberlake
  • City of Stars From La La Land, Music by Justin Hurwitz, Lyrics by Benj Pasek & Justin Paul
  • The Empty Chair From Jim: The James Foley Story, Music & Lyrics by J. Ralph & Sting
  • How Far I’ll Go From Moana, Music and Lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda

All composers in the Best Original Score categories are first time nominees except Thomas Newman who received his 14th nomination. Among the song nominees, Sting was previously nominated three times for songs from The Emperor’s New Groove, Kate & Leopold and Cold Mountain and J. Ralph previously received nominations for the documentaries Chasing Ice and Racing Extinction.
