Two new movies are opening nationwide this weekend:
Expected to top the weekend box office is the disaster movie San Andreas directed by Brad Peyton and starring Dwayne Johnson, Carla Gugino, Alexandra Daddario, Ioan Gruffudd, Archie Panjabi, Hugo Johnstone-Burt, Art Parkinson and Paul Giamatti. The film’s original music is composed by Andrew Lockington (Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters) who previously scored Peyton’s Journey to the Center of the Earth and Journey 2: The Mysterious Island. WaterTower Music has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s music, as well as a cover version of California Dreamin’ performed by Sia. Also opening wide is the romantic comedy Aloha directed by Cameron Crowe and starring Bradley Cooper, Rachel McAdams, Emma Stone, Bill Murray, John Krasinski, Danny McBride and Alec Baldwin. Jónsi & Alex have composed the film’s original score. Sony Legacy and Madison Gate Records have released a soundtrack album featuring two tracks by the composers, as well as songs by artists such as Beck, David Crosby, Fleetwood Mac, The Blue Nile, Kurt Vile, Josh Ritter & more. Opening in limited release this weekend is the action comedy Barely Lethal directed by Kyle Newman and starring Hailee Steinfeld, Jessica Alba, Samuel L. Jackson, Sophie Turner, Dove Cameron, Thomas Mann, Steve O, Toby Sebastian, Gabriel Basso, Jamie King and Rachael Harris. The film’s original music is composed by Mateo Messina (Juno, Butter, Dig, Growing Up Fisher). Lakeshore Records will release a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s music. Barely Lethal follows a young international assassin who yearns for a “normal” adolescence, prompting her to fake her own death and enroll in a suburban high school. Also opening in select theaters is the drama Gemma Bovery directed by Anne Fontaine and starring Gemma Arterton, Fabrice Luchini, Jason Flemyng and Niels Schneider. Bruno Coulais (Coraline, The Chorus, The Crimson Rivers) has composed the film’s original music. Milan Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s music, as well as tracks by Alice Lewis, Rubin Steiner and Alain Chamfort. Also opening in limited release is the indie comedy Results written and directed by Andrew Bujalski and starring Guy Pearce, Cobie Smulders, Kevin Corrigan, Giovanni Ribisi, Brooklyn Decker, Constance Zimmer and Anthony Michael Hall. The film’s original music is composed by Justin Rice. No word on a soundtrack release. Results is set in the fitness world of Austin, Texas and follows a recently divorced, miserable slob who makes a stab at self-improvement by signing up for a personal trainer at a local gym. The comedy premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and is being released in theaters and on VOD by Magnolia Pictures. Visit the official movie website to learn more about the film.
Also opening in select cities is the action thriller Survivor directed by James McTeigue and starring Pierce Brosnan, Milla Jovovich, Dylan McDermott, Angela Bassett and Robert Forster. Ilan Eshkeri (Layer Cake, Still Alice, Stardust, 47 Ronin, Kick-Ass) who previously collaborated with McTeigue on Ninja Assassin has composed the film’s original music. No word yet on a soundtrack album. Survivor follows a Foreign Service Officer who must evade government capture and death by a ruthless assassin in order to stop the real perpetrators’ master. The movie is being released in theaters and on VOD by Alchemy.
