Two new movies are opening nationwide this weekend:
Opening in most theaters is the horror thriller Ouija directed by Stiles White, produced by Michael Bay & Jason Blum and starring Olivia Cooke, Daren Kagasoff, Douglas Smith, Bianca Santos and Ana Coto. The film’s original music is composed by Anton Sanko (The Possession, Rabbit Hole, Big Love). Back Lot Music has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score digitally earlier this week. Also opening wide is the action thriller John Wick directed by Chad Stahelski and starrimb Keanu Reeves, Michael Nyqvist, Adrianne Palicki, Bridget Moynahan, Dean Winters, Ian McShane, Alfie Allen, John Leguizamo and Willem Dafoe. Tyler Bates (Guardians of the Galaxy, 300, Dawn of the Dead) and Joel J. Richard have composed the film’s original score. Varese Sarabande has released a soundtrack album featuring the composers’ music, as well as additional music by Le Castle Vania and songs perfomed by Ciscandra Nostalghia, KALEIDA, The Candy Shop Boys and M86 & Susie Q. Opening semi-wide in around 500 theaters is the sports drama 23 Blast directed by Dylan Baker who als stars in the film alongside Stephen Lang, Alexa Vega, Mark Hapka, Max Adler, Kimberly Jo Zimmer, Bram Hoover, Timothy Busfield, Fred Thompson and Becky Baker. The film’s original music is composed by John Carta. No word on a soundtrack album. 23 Blast follows a teenage athlete loses his eyesight overnight to bacterial meningitis but with the support of parents, a physical therapist, a coach and friends continues to play football The drama is being released by Ocean Avenue Entertainment. Opening in limited release is the indie coming-of-age comedy Laggies directed by Lynn Shelton and starring Keira Knightley, Chloe Grace Moretz and Sam Rockwell. Death Cab for Cutie member Benjamin Gibbard has composed the film’s original music. Lakeshore Records will release a soundtrack album featuring Gibbard’s music next month. Check back on this page for the full album details. Laggies follows a woman who is caught in a quarter-life crisis and finds her life intertwined with a 16-year-old girl and her dad. Opening in New York this weekend before expanding to other markets is the indie drama Low Down directed by Jeff Preiss and starring John Hawkes, Elle Fanning, Lena Headey, Flea, Caleb Landry Jones, Peter Dinklage and Glenn Close. Ohad Talmor has composed the film’s original music. No word yet on a soundtrack release. Low Down centers on the relationship between a teenage girl and her father, a man torn between his musical ambition, his devotion to his daughter, and his suffocating heroin addiction. Also opening in select cities is the thriller Stonehearst Asylum directed by Brad Anderson and starring Kate Beckinsale, Jim Sturgess, Michael Caine, Brendan Gleeson and Ben Kingsley. The film’s original music is composed by John Debney (The Passion of the Christ, Iron Man 2, Elf) who previously scored Anderson’s The Call. Lakeshore Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score earlier this month and a physical version is set to be released in November. Also opening in limited release is the indie drama White Bird in a Blizzard directed by Gregg Araki and starring Shailene Woodley, Eva Green, Christopher Meloni, Shiloh Fernandez, Gabourey Sidibe, Thomas Jane and Angela Bassett. Robin Guthrie and Harold Budd who previously scored Araki’s Mysterious Skin have composed the film’s original music. Lakeshore Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composers’ score. Another limited release this week is the action crime drama Revenge of the Green Dragons directed by Andrew Lau & Andrew Loo, executive produced by Martin Scorsese and starring Justin Chon, Kevin Wu, Harry Shum, Jr., Shuya Chang, Geoff Pierson, Billy Magnussen and Ray Liotta. The film’s original music is composed by Mark Kilian (Tsotsi, Rendition, Pitch Perfect, Traitor). Varese Sarabande has announced a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s music. Also opening in select markets is the horror thriller Exists directed by Eduardo Sanchez and starring Dora Madison Burge, Samuel Davis, Roger Edwards, Chris Osborn, Brian Steele and Denise Williamson. Nima Fakhrara (The Signal, The Pyramid, The Courier) has composed the film’s original music. No soundtrack album has been announced. Exists follows five friends on a camping trip in the Texas Big Thicket who encounter a bloodcurdling force of nature. The thriller is being released both in theaters and on VOD by Lionsgate.
