Two new movies are opening nationwide this weekend:
Expected to top the weekend box office is the action thriller The Equalizer directed by Antoine Fuqua and starring Denzel Washington, Chloë Grace Moretz, Marton Csokas, David Harbour, Bill Pullman and Melissa Leo. The film’s original music is composed by Harry Gregson-Williams (The Chronicles of Narnia, Shrek series, Man on Fire, Unstoppable) who previously scored the director’s The Replacement Killers. Varese Sarabande has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s music earlier this week. Check out our previous article for the full album details. Also opening wide this weekend is the animated feature The Boxtrolls directed by Anthony Stacchi & Graham Annable and featuring the voices of Ben Kingsley, Isaac Hempstead-Wright, Elle Fanning, Jared Harris, , Tracy Morgan, Toni Collette, Nick Frost, Richard Ayoade and Simon Pegg. Dario Marianelli (Atonement, Pride and Prejudice, V for Vendetta, Anna Karenina) has composed the film’s original music. Back Lot Music has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score, as well as the songs from the film, including The Boxtrolls Song written by Eric Idle and performed by Mark Orton and Loch Lomond. Opening in limited release is the British comedy drama Pride directed by Matthew Warchus and starring Bill Nighy, Imelda Staunton, Dominic West, Paddy Considine, Andrew Scott, Joseph Gilgun, George MacKay and Ben Schnetzer. The film’s original music is composed by Christopher Nightingale. Universal Music has released a soundtrack album featuring three tracks from the composer’s score, as well as the songs from the film by artists including Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Wham, Pet Shop Boys, King, Queen, Culture Club, Grace Jones, UB40 and Smokey Robinson. Opening in around 300 theaters is the music drama The Song directed by Richard Ramsey and starring Alan Powell of the group Anthem Lights, Caitlin Nicol-Thomas and Ali Faulkner. Vince Emmett has composed the film’s original score. Capitol Christian Music Group has released a soundtrack album featuring the songs from the film, including 11 original songs and 3 new recordings performed by artists such as Ricky Skaggs, Emmylou Harris, The Byrds’ Roger McGuinn and NEEDTOBREATHE. Also opening in limited release is the thriller Good People directed by Henrik Ruben Genz and starring James Franco, Kate Hudson, Omar Sy and Tom Wilkinson. The film’s original music is composed by Massive Attack member Neil Davidge (Push, Unleashed, Halo 4) has composed the film’s original music. No word yet on a soundtrack release. Good People follows an American couple living in London who fall into severe debt renovating her family’s home and find a stack of cash in their deceased neighbor’s house. The thriller is being released in the U.S. by Millennium Entertainment.
Also opening in select theaters is the drama The Two Faces of January directed by Hossein Amini based on the novel by Patricia Highsmith and starring Viggo Mortensen, Kirsten Dunst and Oscar Isaac. Alberto Iglesias (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, The Constant Gardener, Exodus: Gods and Kings) has composed the film’s original music. Quartet Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the Academy Award-nominated composer’s music earlier this year. Another limited release is the romantic comedy Two Night Stand directed by Max Nichols and starring Miles Teller, Analeigh Tipton, Jessica Szohr and Scott Mescudi. Matthew and Neil de Luca (aka The de Luca Brothers) have composed the film’s original score. No soundtrack album has been announced. Two Night Stand follows a pair of twentysomething strangers who are trapped together in an apartment after a Manhattan blizzard forces them to extend a regrettable one-night stand. Also opening in limited release is the Civil War drama Field of Lost Shoes directed by Sean McNamara and starring David Arquette, Tom Skerritt and Jason Isaacs. Frederik Wiedmann (Green Lantern: The Animated Series, The Damned, The Dying of the Light) has composed the film’s original music. La-La Land Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score earlier this month. Also opening in select theaters is the biographical drama Jimi: All Is By My Side written and directed by John Ridley (12 Years a Slave) and starring André Benjamin, Hayley Atwell, Imogen Poots, Andrew Buckley and Ruth Negga. Danny Bramson and Waddy Wachtel (Paul Blart: Mall Cop, The Benchwarmers) have composed the film’s original score. No word on a soundtrack release Jimi: All Is By My Side chronicles a year in Jimi Hendrix’s life from 1966-67 as an unknown backup guitarist playing New York’s Cheetah Club to making his mark in London’s music scene up until his Monterey Pop triumph. The drama premiered at last year’s Toronto Film Festival and is being released by XLrator Media.
Already in select theaters since this past Wednesday is the animated feature Jack and the Cuckoo-Clock Heart directed by Mathias Malzieu & Stephane Berla and featuring the voices of Orlando Seale, Samantha Barks, Harry Sadeghi, Stephane Cornicard, Sophie Ellis, Jessie Buckley, Barbara Scaff, Michelle Fairley, Richard Riddings, Howard Samuels, Steve Nicolson, Janet Dibley and Charlie Hayes. Another limited release this week is the indie drama Days and Nights written and directed by Christian Camargo and starring Katie Holmes, William Hurt, Allison Janney, Cherry Jones, Russell Means, Michael Nyqvist, Jean Reno, Juliet Rylance, Mark Rylance and Ben Whishaw. The film’s original music is composed by Claire van Kampen. Days and Nights inspired by Anton Chekhov’s The Seagull is set in rural New England in the 1980s and follows a movie star who brings her paramour to her lakeside estate to visit her family on Memorial Day weekend.
