Four new movies are opening nationwide this weekend:
Expected to top the weekend box office is the action adventure Teenage Ninja Mutant Turtles directed by Jonathan Liebesman and starring Megan Fox, Will Arnett, William Fichtner, as well as the voices of Alan Ritchson, Noel Fisher, Jeremy Howard and Pete Ploszek. The film’s original music is composed by Brian Tyler (Iron Man 3, Thor: The Dark World, Fast Five). Atlantic Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s music earlier this week. Brian Tyler has also composed the music for the disaster action adventure Into the Storm directed by Steven Quale and starring Richard Armitage, Sarah Wayne Callies, Matt Walsh, Alycia Debnam-Carey, Arlen Escarpeta, Max Deacon, Nathan Kress, Jeremy Sumpter, Kyle Davis and Jon Reep. Varese Sarabande has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s music digitally earlier this week and a CD version will be coming out later this month. Also opening wide this weekend is the comedy drama The Hundred-Foot Journey directed by Lasse Hallström and starring Helen Mirren, Manish Dayal, Om Puri and Charlotte Le. The film’s original music is composed by A.R. Rahman (Slumdog Millionaire, People Like Us, 127 Hours). Hollywood Records will release a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score on Tuesday, August 12. Check out our previous news article for the full album details. The final wide release of the week is the dance movie Step Up All In directed by Trish Sie and starring Ryan Guzman, Briana Evigan, Stephen “tWitch” Boss, Misha Gabriel, Izabella Miko, Alyson Stoner and Adam Sevan. Ultra Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the songs from the film by artists Pitbull, OK Go, Lil Wayne, Bobby Brown, Steve Aoki & more. Click here for the full album details. Opening in select cities before expanding to more markets within the next couple of weeks is the romantic comedy What If directed by Michael Dowse and starring Daniel Radcliffe, Zoe Kazan, Adam Driver, Rafe Spall, Megan Park, Mackenzie Davis and Oona Chaplin. AC Newman who is best known as the leader of The New Pornographers has composed the film’s original music. Milan Records has released a soundtrack album featuring Newman’s music, as well as songs by Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes, The Parting Gifts, Patrick Watson and Marsha Hunt. Also opening in limited release is the indie comedy drama About Alex written and directed by Jesse Zwick and starring Aubrey Plaza, Max Greenfield, Nate Parker, Max Minghella, Jason Ritter, Maggie Grace and Jane Levy. The film’s original music is composed by Joel P West (Short Term 12). No soundtrack album has been announced. About Alex follows a circle of twenty-something friends who reunite for a weekend away after one of them suffers an emotional breakdown. The dramedy premiered at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival and is being released by Screen Media Films both in theaters and on VOD.
Also opening in select theaters is the documentary James Cameron’s Deepsea Challenge 3D directed by John Bruno, Andrew Wight & Ray Quinn, which follows follows the scientific exploration of Challenger Deep, the deepest place on Earth, with information collected over a series of dives by a manned submersible. Brett Aplin, Amy Bastow and Ricky Edwards have composed the film’s original music. No word on a soundtrack release.
