Will Bates, the founder of the film composition and audio post collective Fall On Your Sword, and Phil Mossman are reteaming with director Mike Cahill on the upcoming indie sci-fi drama I, Origins. The film is written and directed by Cahill and stars Michael Pitt, Brit Marling, Astrid Bergès-Frisbey, Steven Yeun and Archie Panjabi. The movie follows a molecular biologist and his lab partner who uncover startling evidence that may fundamentally change society as we know it and cause them to question their once-certain beliefs in science and spirituality. Cahill is also producing the project with Hunter Gray (Terri) and Alex Orlovsky (Blue Valentine, The Place Beyond the Pines). Bates and Mossman have previously scored Cahill’s narrative feature directorial debut Another Earth as part of Fall On Your Sword. I, Origins will be premiering at the Sundance Film Festival in January.
Bates is also scoring the documentary The Notorious Mr. Bout. The film is directed by Tony Gerber & Maxim Pozdorovki and centers on the internationally known arms smuggler Viktor Bout who was arrested in 2008 in Thailand as a result of a U.S. government sting operation. Bates’ Fall On Your Sword colleague Ryan M. Price provided the sound design and mix for the documentary, as well as for the indie drama Listen Up Philip written and directed by Alex Ross Perry and starringJason Schwartzman, Elisabeth Moss, Jonathan Pryce, Krysten Ritter and Joséphine de La Baume. Both movies will also premiere at Sundance.
