Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy announced today at Star Wars Celebration Europe that John Williams will return to score the upcoming sci-fi fantasy sequel Star Wars: Episode VII. J.J. Abrams is directing the film and Michael Arndt (Toy Story 3, Little Miss Sunshine) is writing the screenplay. No plot details have been announced yet, but the characters of the original trilogy, including Luke Skywalker (played by Mark Hamill), Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) and Han Solo (Harrison Ford) are expected to return. Lawrence Kasdan and Simon Kinberg serve as consultants, alongside George Lucas. Williams has scored all previous six episodes of the Star Wars saga. Check out a video interview with the composer about his involvement in the upcoming seventh installment after the jump (via StarWars.com). Star Wars: Episode VII is set to be released in 2015 by Walt Disney Pictures.

Not sure how I feel about this. I was hoping for entirely new and fresh approach.
… I was hoping Michael Giacchino would get a shot, since already so many things about this new Star Wars are going to be different. Anyway, you can’t go wrong with John Williams
Let’s see, Disney and Star Wars with JJRebootrams at the helm.
Okay, so Hans will feature a new slick hairdo and look that screams mid-life crisis, and will tell Chewie to “punch it” when they go into hypersapce.
Leia will turn into a kick-butt woman who suddenly knows superior fighting techniques.
More ugly ship designs, as in RebootTrek style.
The pacing and story telling ew knew in the original trilogy, gone.
Did I miss anything?
Let’s hope his health permits him to see this new trilogy through. Yet another phase in the maestro’s career, what with this, Spielberg’s ‘American Sniper,’ and, hopefully, his first foray into the Pixar-verse with ‘Inside Out.’
I’m hoping Abrams and co. are coming up with something different for this latest crop of films; or it will just be a case of repetition…”Dark powers rise”…”Good guys win”…etc, etc.
John Williams is scoring Inside Out? wtf?
And Morricone is scoring an animated feature film. Things are being shaken up.
John Williams = Star Wars!!!! I’am very happy that John Williams will score Episode 7!!!!
