Only one new movie is opening nationwide this weekend:
Expected to top the weekend box office is the superhero film The Wolverine directed by James Mangold and starring Hugh Jackman, Famke Janssen, Will Yun Lee, Brian Tee, Svetlana Khodchenkova, Hiroyuki Sanada, Tao Okamoto and Rila Fukushim. The film’s music is composed by Marco Beltrami (World War Z, Scream) who previously scored Mangold’s 3:10 to Yuma. Sony Classical has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s music earlier this week. Opening semi-wide is the comedy The To Do List directed by Maggie Carey and starring Aubrey Plaza, Johnny Simmons, Bill Hader, Alia Shawkat, Rachel Bilson, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Andy Samberg, Donald Glover and Connie Britton. Universal Music Enterprises has released a soundtrack album featuring the film’s songs including a number of 90s classics by Tears for Fears, Cranberries, Mazzy Star, House of Love, Elastica, Gin Blossoms and Big Head Todd and the Monsters. Opening in New York and Los Angeles before expanding to other markets within the next couple of weeks is the comedy drama Blue Jasmine written and directed by Woody Allen and starring Cate Blanchett, Alec Baldwin, Louis C.K., Bobby Cannavale, Andrew Dice Clay, Sally Hawkins, Peter Sarsgaard and Michael Stuhlbarg. Blue Jasmine follows a New York socialite who moves into her sister’s modest apartment in San Francisco to try to pull herself back together again after her marriage to a wealthy businessman falls apart. Also opening in limited release is the indie drama The Time Being directed by Nenad Cicin-Sain and starring Frank Langella, Wes Bentley, Sarah Paulson, Ahna O’Reilly , Corey Stoll and Gina Gallego. The film’s music is written by Academy Award-winning composer Jan A.P. Kaczmarek (Finding Neverland, Unfaithful, Get Low). No soundtrack release has been announced yet. The Time Being follows a young artist who accepts a series of bizarre commissions from an eccentric, dying millionaire who may be trying to either help further his career or destroy his life. Also opening in select cities is the thriller Breaking the Girls directed by Jamie Babbit and starring Madeline Zima, Shawn Ashmore, Kate Levering and Agnes Bruckner. The film’s original score is composed by Mateo Messina (Juno, Butter). No word on a soundtrack release. Breaking the Girls follows a university student who, when slandered by a hostile classmate, is befriended by a manipulative man who proposes to kill each other’s arch enemies.
