Johnny Jewel revealed in a recent interview with Noisey (via The Playlist) that he is writing music for Ryan Gosling’s upcoming directorial debut How to Catch a Monster. The film stars Christina Hendricks, Saoirse Ronan, Eva Mendes, Iain De Caestecker, Matt Smith and Ben Mendelsohn. The movie is set against the surreal dreamscape of a vanishing city and centered on a single mother of two being swept into a macabre and dark fantasy underworld while her teenage son discovers a secret road leading to an underwater town. Marc Platt (Drive, 2 Guns, Legally Blonde) & Adam Siegel are producing the project for Marc Platt Productions, alongside Michel Litvak & David Lancaster (Bobby, Legion) for Bold Films. Gosling who has also written the screenplay is also producing for Phantasma Films. Jewel has previously written a full unused score for the Gosling-starring Drive. How to Catch a Monster is currently in post-production and is expected to premiere in 2014.
Jewel has also scored the pilot for the upcoming A&E series Those Who Kill. The show starring Chloë Sevigny and James D’Arcy is ased on a Danish crime series format inspired by the bestselling work of author Elsebeth Egholm. The series follows a freshly minted and incredibly smart police detective who tracks down serial killers while also attempting to come to terms with her past by continuing to investigate her stepfather, who she suspects may be a serial killer. Glen Morgan (The X-Files, Millennium) wrote the pilot and serves as executive producer and showrunner. Brian Grazer & Francie Calfo are also executive producing the project for Imagine Television (Friday Night Lights, 24) and Peter Bose and Jonas Allen are executive producing the 21Fox production for Miso Films. Joe Carnahan (Narc, The A-Team) has directed the pilot episode. Those Who Kill is set to premiere with its first season of 10 episodes in 2014 on A&E.
Jewel’s other upcoming projects also include the indie drama Beautiful Now. The film is written and directed by Daniela Amavia and stars Abigail Spencer as a passionate dancer who finds herself mulling an extreme act when she reaches a crossroads in her life. Cheyenne Jackson and Collette Wolf are co-starring. Keith Kjarval (A Single Shot) is producing the movie for Unified Pictures. Finally, the composer also revealed that is scoring a previously unannounced film entitled Pimp starring Dakota Fanning and Mary J. Blige.
