Three new movies are opening nationwide this weekend:
Expected to top the weekend box office is the animated feature The Croods directed by Chris Sanders & Kirk DeMicco and featuring the voice talent of Nicolas Cage, Ryan Reynolds, Emma Stone, Catherine Keener, Clark Duke and Cloris Leachman. Alan Silvestri (Back to the Future Forrest Gump) has composed the film’s score. Relativity Music Group has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score, as well as the original song Shine Your Way performed by Yuna feat. Owl City earlier this week. Also opening wide is the action thriller Olympus Has Fallen directed by Antoine Fuqua and starring Gerard Butler, Angela Bassett, Robert Forster, Ashley Judd, Melissa Leo, Dylan McDermott, Cole Hauser, Radha Mitchell and Rick Yune. The film’s score is composed by Trevor Morris (Immortals, The Tudors, The Borgias). Relativity Music Group has released a soundtrack album featuring Morris’ score earlier this week. The final wide release of the week is the comedy Admission directed by Paul Weitz and starring Tina Fey, Paul Rudd, Michael Sheen, Lily Tomlin, Wallace Shawn, Gloria Reuben and Nat Wolff. Stephen Trask (Hedwig and the Angry Inch, In Good Company) has composed the film’s original score. Back Lot Music has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s music earlier this week. Opening in limited release is the Australian musical comedy The Sapphires directed by Wayne Blair and starring Chris O’Dowd, Deborah Mailman, Jessica Mauboy, Shari Sebbens and Miranda Tapsell. A soundtrack album featuring the film’s songs has been released overseas last year and on Columbia Records earlier this week (click here for the details). A separate soundtrack featuring composer Cezary Skubiszewski‘s original score is also available digitally. Also opening in limited release this weekend is the coming of age musical Hunky Dory directed by Mark Evans and starring Minnie Driver, Aneurin Barnard, Kimberley Nixon, Robert Pugh and Steve Speirs. Decca Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the film’s songs performed by the movie’s cast and including cover versions of popular tracks by David Bowie, Roxy Music, The Byrds, Beach Boys and Nick Drake. Film composer Joby Talbot (The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy) provided the song arrangements and also scored the movie. Check out our previous article for the full soundtrack details.
Another limited release this week is the romantic drama Love and Honor directed by Danny Mooney and starring Liam Hemsworth, Teresa Palmer, Austin Stowell, Aimee Teegarden, Chris Howell and Max Adler. The film’s original score is composed by Alex Heffes (The Last King of Scotland, State of Play). No soundtrack album has been announced at this point. The movie about a young soldier in Vietnam who is dumped by his hometown girlfriend and returns to the States to win her back is being released in select theaters by IFC Films and is also available on VOD.
