John Williams will be honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award at this year’s Classic Brit Awards. The composer who celebrated his 80th birthday this year will be the first film composer to receive the lifetime achievement award in the award ceremony’s 13-year history. The full list of nominations will be announced on September 6 and the award ceremony will take place at the Royal Albert Hall on October 2, 2012. Last year, late composer John Barry was honored posthumously with an outstanding contribution to music award.

In related news, Williams’ 80th birthday was celebrated last weekend at a gala concert on Tanglewood. Steven Spielberg, Jessye Norman and James Taylor appeared on stage to toast the composer. The celebration also featured pre-recorded video greeting from President Obama, George Lucas, Bill Clinton, and Seiji Ozawa.
