Richard Hartley has composed the score for Mike Newell’s upcoming film adaptation of Great Expectations. The film based on Charles Dickens’ famous novel stars Jeremy Irvine as the young orphan Pip who is given a chance to rise from his humble beginnings thanks to a mysterious benefactor. Helena Bonham Carter co-stars as Miss Havisham, alongside Ralph Fiennes, Robbie Coltrane, Ewen Bremner, Jason Flemyng, Sally Hawkins, Tamzin Outhwaite, David Walliams and Holliday Grainger. David Nicholls (One Day, Starter for 10) has adapted Dickens’ novel for the screen. Stephen Woolley (Interview with a Vampire, The Crying Game), Elizabeth Karlsen (Little Voice) and David Faigenblum are producing the BBC Films, Number 9 Films and Lipsync Productions project. The music was recorded at Angel Studios in London. Hartley whose film scoring credits include such titles as The Life and Death of Peter Sellers, A Thousand Acres and Stealing Beauty has previously collaborated with Newell on the 1995 comedy An Awfully Big Adventure starring Alan Rickman and Hugh Grant. Newell’s other previous musical collaborators include Patrick Doyle (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Donnie Brasco), Rachel Portmam (Mona Lisa Smile) and Harry Gregson-Williams (Prince of Persia). Great Expectations is expected to premiere at one of the major film festivals this fall.
