Walt Disney Pictures confirmed today that Hans Zimmer will be returning to score the studio’s upcoming remake of The Lion King. The film is directed by Jon Favreau (The Jungle Book, Iron Man) and stars Donald Glover, Beyoncé Knowles-Carter, James Earl Jones, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Alfre Woodard, JD McCrary, Shahadi Wright Joseph, John Kani, John Oliver, Seth Rosen, Billy Eichner and Keegan-Michael Key. Jeff Nathanson (Catch Me If You Can) penned the screenplay. Favreau is also producing the project with Jeffrey Silver (Beauty and the Beast) and Karen Gilchrist. Zimmer scored the original 1994 animated classic and won his first and to date only Academy Award. No word yet on whether Elton John’s song from the animated movie will be featured in the remake. The Lion King will be released on July 19, 2019.
