David Newman has recently recorded his score for the upcoming comedy Girls Trip. The film is directed by Malcolm D. Lee (The Best Man, The Best Man Holiday, Undercover Brother) and stars Regina Hall, Jada Pinkett Smith, Tiffany Haddish, Larenz Tate, Kate Walsh, Mike Colter and Queen Latifah. The movie follows four lifelong friends as they travel to New Orleans for the annual Essence Festival. Kenya Barris & Tracy Oliver (Barbershop: The Next Cut) wrote the screenplay. Will Packer (Ride Along, Think Like a Man, The Wedding Ringer) is producing the project with Lee. Newman has previously collaborated with the director on the 2008 feature Welcome Home, Roscoe Jenkins. Girls Trip is set to be released on July 21, 2017 by Universal Pictures. It may not be a grand scoring opportunity, but I can’t begin to tell you how good it feels to see David Newman on a studio movie again.
He’s also scoring that “Green Eggs and Ham” series in development. It’s been picked up for thirteen episodes. The agency he is currently with, Allegro Talent Group, reported it on their official Twitter page.
