Volker Bertelmann (aka Hauschka) (Lion, Hotel Mumbai, Patrick Melrose, Adrift, The Old Guard) is the new composer of the German Netflix original series Barbarians (Barbaren). He has written the original music for the second season of the show created by Arne Nolting, Jan Martin Scharf & Andreas Heckmann and starring returning cast members Jeanne Goursaud, Laurence Rupp & David Schütter, as well as new additions Daniel Donskoy, Murathan Muslu, Cynthia Micas, Giovanni Carta, Katharina Heyer and Alessandro Fella. The new season of the historical drama takes place one year after the Varus Battle the Roman troops have returned to Germania and follows Ari as he is confronted with his Roman past once more. Stefan Ruzowitzky (The Counterfeiters, Patient Zero) serves as the showrunner and is also executive producing the project with Sabine de Mardt, Andreas Bareiss and Rainer Marquass. Ali N. Askin & Maurus Ronner have scored the first season of the show, which premiered in 2020. Season 2 of Barbarians will premiere on October 21, 2022 on Netflix.
Bertelmann’s other recent projects include Edward Berger’s All Quiet on the Western Front, which premiered last month at the Toronto International Film Festival and is being released in select theaters this and next week before making its Netflix debut on October 28, Gunnar Vikene’s War Sailor, which also just premiered at TIFF, as well as Dev Patel’s Monkey Man.
