HBO Max has announced today that singer/songwriter Leland (aka Brett McLaughlin) is composing original songs and the original score for the upcoming HBO Max scripted special Homeschool Musical: Class of 2020. The show is inspired by Laua Benanti’s #SunshineSongs social media campaign and will star a diverse group of student actors whose school productions have shut down due to the pandemic. The special will will feature original music performed from their homes and explores tried-and-true themes of classic teen movies through the totally unique lens of a world turned upside down by the global pandemic. Benanti is also executive producing the World of Wonder production with Randy Barbato & Fenton Bailey (Party Monster) and Tom Campbell (RuPaul’s Drag Race). Leland has previously been involved in several film/TV projects, including the Netflix movie Sierra Burgess Is a Loser, which he co-scored and Joel Edgerton’s Boy Erased, for which he co=wrote an original song. No premiere date has been announced yet for Homeschool Musical: Class of 2020.
