Three new movies are opening nationwide this weekend:
Opening in most theaters is the superhero movie Deadpool 2 directed by David Leitch and starring Ryan Reynolds, Josh Brolin, Morena Baccarin, T.J. Miller, Julian Dennison, Zazie Beetz, Brianna Hildebrand and Jack Kesy. The film’s original score is composed by Tyler Bates (Guardians of the Galaxy, 300, Watchmen, John Wick, The Punisher). Also opening wide is the comedy Book Club directed by Bill Holderman and starring Diane Keaton, Jane Fonda, Candice Bergen, Mary Steenburgen, Craig T. Nelson, Andy Garcia and Don Johnson. Peter Nashel (I, Tonya, The Night Listener, Bee Season, Marco Polo) has composed the film’s original score. The movie also features an original song, Living in the Moment, written by Carole Bayer Sager, Walter Afanasieff & Jay Landers and performed by Katharine McPhee. Also opening wide is the family comedy Show Dogs directed by Raja Gosnell and stars Will Arnett, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, Natasha Lyonne, Jordin Sparks, Gabriel Iglesias, Shaquille O’Neal, Alan Cumming and Stanley Tucci. The film’s original score is composed by Heitor Pereira (Despicable Me, Minions, The Angry Birds Movie, The Smurfs, If I Stay). Opening in around 350 theaters is the documentary Pope Francis: A Man of His Word directed by Wim Wenders. Laurent Petitgand who has previously scored the director’s features Faraway, So Close!, Beyond the Clouds and The Salt of the Earth has composed the film’s original music. Back Lot Music has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score, as well as the song These Are the Words by Patti Smith. Opening in New York and Los Angeles before expanding to more markets over the next couple of weeks is the drama On Chesil Beach directed by Dominic Cooke and starring Saoirse Ronan, Billy Howle, Anne-Marie Duff, Adrian Scarborough, Emily Watson and Samuel West. The film’s original music is composed by Dan Jones (Shadow of the Vampire, Lady Macbeth, Max) and features solo violin by Esther Yoo. Decca Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score, as well as classical pieces by Beethoven, Haydn, Elgar and Mozart. Click here for the full album details.
Also opening in limited release is the dramatic thriller First Reformed written and directed by Paul Schrader and starringEthan Hawke, Amanda Seyfried and Cedric Kyles. Lustmord (aka Brian Williams) has composed the film’s original music. No word on a soundtrack release. The movie revolves around a pastor of a small church in upstate New York who spirals out of control after a soul-shaking encounter with an unstable environmental activist and his pregnant wife.
