Matthew Herbert has recently composed the music for the upcoming romantic drama Disobedience. The film is directed by Sebastian Lelio (Gloria, Christmas) and stars Rachel Weisz, Rachel McAdams and Alessandro Nivola. The movie is based on the novel of the same title by Naomi Alderman and follows a woman who returns to her Orthodox Jewish home after learning about the death of her estranged father and stirs up controversy when she shows an interest in an old childhood friend. Lelio also wrote the screenplay with Rebecca Lenkiewicz (Ida). Frida Torresblanco (Pan’s Labyrinth, Magic Magic) is producing the project for Braven Films, alongside Weisz for HGS Productions and Ed Guiney (Room, The Lobster, Frank) for Element Pictures. Disobedience will premiere in September at the Toronto Film Festival.
Herbert (Life in a Day, Human Traffic) has previously collaborated with Lelio on this year’s drama A Fantastic Woman. The movie starring Daniela Vega and Francisco Reyes follows a waitress and singer who is in love with an older man who suddenly dies and is forced to confront his family and society. The movie premiered at this year’s Berlin Film Festival and was picked up by Sony Pictures Classics for a domestic release later this year.
