EuropaCorp announced today that Alexandre Desplat is set to score the upcoming thriller Kursk. The film is directed by Thomas Vinterberg (The Hunt, Far from the Madding Crowd) and stars Matthias Schoenaerts, Colin Firth, Léa Seydoux, Peter Simonischek, Max Von Sydow and Michael Nyqvist. The movie is inspired by the true story of the K-141 KURSK, a Russian flagship nuclear-powered submarine that sank to the bottom of the Barents Sea in August 2000. Robert Rodat (Saving Private Ryan, The Patriot, Thor: The Dark World) wrote the screenplay. Luc Besson (Leon: The Professional, The Fifth Element) and Ariel Zeitoun (Miss Sloane, Colombiana) are producing the project. Desplat has previously collaborated with Besson on the upcoming Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, which will open in theaters this summer. Kursk is currently shooting in Europe and is expected to be released in 2018 by STX Entertainment.
Desplat’s other upcoming projects also include Roman Polanski’s Based on a True Story, Guillermo del Toro’s The Shape of Water and George Clooney’s Suburbicon.
