Elliott Wheeler has been tapped to score the upcoming Netflix original series The Get Down. The show is created by Baz Luhrmann (Moulin Rouge!, The Great Gatsby, Romeo & Juliet, Australia) & Shawn Ryan (The Shield, Last Resort) and stars Shameik Moore, Justice Smith, Herizen Guardiola, Jaden Smith, Skylan Brooks, Tremaine Browne, Jr., Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Jimmy Smits and Giancarlo Esposito. The period drama is set in 1970s New York and follows a group of teens struggling to survive and find outlets through music. Luhrmann & Ryan are also executive producing the Sony Pictures Television production with Catherine Martin, Paul Watters, Thomas Kelly, Stephen Adly Guirgis and Marney Hochman. Wheeler has previously collaborated with Luhrmann on the stage musical adaptation of Strictly Ballroom as principal composer and arranger and also served as an arranger and additional music producer on the director’s 2013 feature The Great Gatsby. His other previous scoring credits include the Australian thriller Restraint. The Get Down is set to premiere on August 12, 2016 on Netflix.
