john-williamsDreamWorks Pictures announced today that John Williams will be reteaming with Steven Spielberg on the director’s upcoming family drama The BFG. The movie starring Mark Rylance and Ruby Barnhill is based on the book by Roald Dahl (Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, Fantastic Mr. Fox) and tells the story of a young orphan girl and the mysterious friendly Giant who introduces her to Giant Country. Melissa Mathison (E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Kundun) has adapted the material for the screen. Spielberg is also producing the project with Frank Marshall (The Bourne Series, The Sixth Sense, Poltergeist) and Sam Mercer (Signs, Unbreakable). The BFG is set to be released on July 1, 2016 by Walt Disney Pictures.

As previously reported, Williams also has the seventh installment in the Star Wars series, The Force Awakens coming up later this year.

I just hope he is healthy enough to score this one, as well as Episodes VIII and IX.

    • Roger says:

no. hans zimmer for Episodes VIII and IX

      • William says:

        no.

      • BB says:

Shut the f*ck up! Hans Zimmer has nothing to do with Star Wars! His musical style is pathetic and lazy!

        • Roger says:

          Hans Zimmer is a God.

          • BB says:

Is that your argument? Commenting thus deduce two things: you can not stand the idea that the JW will to music the episodes VIII and IX and how much you are childish, crude and jerk.

        • Roger says:

don’t need an argument. Hans Zimmer is the greatest. JW? meh

          • BB says:

            Assh*le, stupid and jerk

          • BB says:

The guy is so great that we did not know NOTHING to music alone, and can turn in ALL sound design (see Man of Steel and Chappie).

          • tiago says:

I think that is pretty clear right now that this guy is a troll. Such ridiculous opinion can’t be taken seriously. And we all know one of internet’s golden rules: don’t feed the trolls.

        • Jamesjp14 says:

Umm Hans Zimmer is one of the greatest film composers. “Pathetic and lazy”- what’s that supposed to mean!? John Williams and Hans Zimmer are both great composers so maybe you should shut up instead.

          • BB says:

Yes, yes. Of course Zimmer is one of the “big” hahahaha …
While JW writes his musical ideas for a movie alone, Zimmer, The Lazy, does the same thing with other ten hands to help him … If he was so ‘great’ well, Pearl Harbor, Pirates of the Caribbean II and many others films would more than NINE people doing the same thing. Zimmer = pathetic and Lazy

          • Roger says:

thats what a composer does. he directs other musicians. Don’t hate on Hans for being the greatest of all time

            BRMMMMMMMMMMMM!!

          • BB says:

It’s amazing the number of people who have a gut instead of a brain … A composer, when writing a soundtrack, do it ALONE! He ‘directs’ other musicians at the time of Interpretation of music! John Williams, for your government, NEVER did what Hans Zimmer does! His talent is undeniable, and only this. He is directly responsible for writing and lead the orchestra in many works (Superman, Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and others). But of course you made a blind Roger, do not know that right? And one more thing: if John Williams died, the composer who will succeed him will be Michael Giacchino. Frank Marshall and Kathy Kennedy, know the importance of music in Star Wars, and they will not hire a guy who has become an organic art that is music to movies, a mechanical, cold and shallow thing. No wonder that Alexandre Desplat was commissioned to Rogue One …

John Williams, Alexandre Desplat and Michael Giacchino = pure music, organic (use of a full orchestra) and original

Zimmer and his cronies = “music” noisy, unoriginal and deep … Made a saucer.

Williams is good but he is as good as the classic movies he’s done. You’ll never hear the diverseness of zimmer in williams music. Inception, Lion King, Gladiator, Last Samurai. Dark Knight all movies williams would have taken and and created a bland orchestral score for. Sorry but it’s true.

Until Williams does something like “The Illest Gangsta on the Block” zimmer will be number one.

            BRMMMMMMMMM!!

          • BB says:

No, kkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk, wait, there’s more kkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk

You suggest that John Williams take a cue equal to that shit? My dear Roger, anyone can play the pathetic style of Hans Zimmer Harry Gregson-Williams, Steve Mazzaro, Geoff Zanelli, in short, anyone who says composer at that pathetic manufactures (for it is a manufactory same) Remote Control! Even John Williams, is able to make an electronic music. But when he does, makes HARMONIOUSLY! Jerry Goldsmith, was the king of the merge between electronics and orchestra, and get this, it comes out very, very, rather than Hans Zimmer and his pathetic helpers!

And Goldsmith, when was the score Poltergeist II, said: “Emotions can not be programmed”. That is, the more you make a purely electronic score (as Chappie), the music has to reflect the history, the emotion of the characters. Zimmer thing, did not here … (and not in Man of Steel)!

About Chappie, I have only one comment to make on this score: headaches.

On the day that Hans Zimmer, make a track as the main theme of The Adventures of Tintin (and do it, ALONE, without the help of anyone), I recognize him as a good composer …

Plus, you just can quote things from the past: The Lion King, The Last Samurai and Gladiator.Answer me one thing then: how long Zimmer does not “make” a score in the suit of these three?

The truth is that Zimmer was never film composer. For a guy who makes a symphony orchestra sound like a giant synthesizer, can not receive the nickname “film composer.” The guy is not overcome, and anyone can do what he does: to the Brazilian Pedro Bromfman, which is not a Remote Control, made a track just like the Batman! Javier Navarrete, suffered at the hands of arrogant German, to be advised by Zimmer in person, to LEAVE your style, and make a score “FASHION” in Wrath of the Titans. And more recently, Alan Silvestri made a fully orchestral score of Night Run, and was replaced by DJ Junkie XL and, get this, the score of the last, it was crap!

For this and other reasons, I do not recognize Zimmer as a “God”. He may even be one, but it is the “God” that ended the music of cinema; one that ended the art. For him, composing for films is not a “challenge”, just call five composers to help and ready, it’s done a track.

And to finish, you know if it was the Zimmer who composed this track? Was it not the Mazarro or Andrew ??? Maybe you’re not worshiping the “God” wrong?

          • Roger says:

So much hate for someone you don’t even know let alone understand. Zimmer has achieved a level of greatness you will never achieve, won an oscar and has become synonymous with pushing the boundaries of film score. When i listen to a new zimmer score i don’t know what to expect and that is what greatness is. From Chappie to interstellar to pirates. So what if he has other composers helping him? he is still the brains of the operation, the captain of the crew and without him none of the masterpieces will be realized. The theme from interstellar is 100x better than anything williams has done the last 10 years. sorry but its true. he’s only getting better

          • BB says:

Roger’s right, that’s right … You idolizes and I hate him … Does the following sucker, since you love so much Hans Zimmer, there will give him the ass 😉

Who knows if he f*cking you, he forgets the Oscar lost to Desplat 😀

          • Roger says:

and all he has is insults because he has nothing left. LOL!

continue to enjoy the dominance of RC and HANS because its going to last FOREVERRRRRR BWAWAWAWAWA! we ain’t going no where !

            🙂

          • BB says:

No, IMATURE … I left many arguments. However, as I am discussing with a CHILD, grow and mature.

          • Roger says:

you can’t stop the reign 🙂

      • Linkword says:

        You’re stupid!

    • Justin Boggan says:

Hum. You mean the same Oscar voters who are are letting their maids and housekeepers pick the winners?
      breitbart.com/big-hollywood/2015/02/17/critic-oscars-are-political-game-where-nominees-are-picked-by-hollywood-maids/

Or maybe you mean the Oscar people who admit they vote for films they didn’t even watch?
      cinemablend.com/new/Two-Oscar-Voters-Admit-They-Didn-t-Watch-12-Years-Slave-Voted-It-Anyway-41981.html

Or maybe you meant the Oscar voter who said it’s a popularity contest and that they vote for their friends and don’t vote for people they don’t like? (James Toback)

Yes, I’m sure they know Zimmer’s greatness. It’s not like they WOULDN’T vote for his scores and not listne to them. It’s not like they wouldn’t personally listen but let their gardener pick somebody. These are certainly the kind of people to decide “greatness” and elevate Zimmer onto such a level.

  2. JeffG says:

This is scheduled for July 2016, not 2015.

  3. Linkword says:

Star Wars: The Force Awakens will be recorded in Los Angeles. What do you think about this?

  4. Justin Boggan says:

Who should score “the BFG” if Williams ends up being unable to? Based upon the plot, I’m leaning toward Rachel Portman.
