Last night, Broadcast Music, Inc. (BMI), held its annual Film & TV Awards at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills, California. Mychael Danna was honored with the Richard Kirk Award, which is bestowed on composers who have made significant contributions to the realm of film and television music. The composer whose film scoring credits include last year’s Life of Pi, for which he received his first Academy Award, as well as Moneyball, Girl Interrupted, Little Miss Sunshine, (500) Days of Summer and The Sweet Hereafter was presented the award by the night’s hosts, BMI President & CEO Del Bryant and BMI Vice President, Film/TV Relations Doreen Ringer-Ross. Several of Danna’s regular collaborators congratulated him via a tribute video, including Ang Lee (The Ice Storm, Ride with the Devil), Atom Egoyan (Exotica, Chloe), Mira Nair (Monsoon Wedding, Vanity Fair) and Bennett Miller (Capote). In addition, the composers of music featured in the past year’s top-grossing films, top-rated primetime network television series and highest-ranking cable network programs were also celebrated. Among the composers who accepted their awards in person were James Newton Howard (The Hunger Games: Catching Fire), Danny Elfman (American Hustle, Mr. Peabody & Sherman, Epic), Alexandre Desplat (The Monuments Men) Brian Tyler (Now You See Me, Thor: The Dark World, Hawaii 5-0), Junkie XL (Divergent, 300: Rise of an Empire), Theodore Shapiro & Ludwig Goransson (We’re the Millers), Mark Mothersbaugh (Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2, The Lego Movie), John Ottman (Non-Stop), Michael Andrews (The Heat), Christopher Lennertz (Ride Along), Mark Isham (42), Andrew Feltenstein & John Nau (Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues), Clinton Shorter (2 Guns), Stanley Clarke (The Best Man Holiday), Harald Kloser (White House Down), Snuffy Walden (Under the Dome), Rob Simonsen (Blue Bloods), Atli Orvarsson (Chicago Fire, Chicago P.D.), Blake Neely (Arrow, Resurrection), David Buckley (The Good Wife), Chad Fischer (Scandal), Tree Adams (Perception), Noah Sorota (Falling Skies), Ed Shearmur (Devious Maids) and Michael Penn (Masters of Sex). Additionally, Randy Edelman received the BMI Spotlight Award in recognition for his theme for The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr., which has been used in games of the Olympiads spanning nearly two decades. Film music journalist Jon Burlingame was given a Special Citation of Appreciation for his expertise in the discipline and was congratulated by composers including John Williams, Charlie Fox, Christopher Lennertz and Lalo Schifrin via a tribute video.
