Quartet Records has announced three new limited edition soundtrack releases. First up is a new soundtrack album for the 1984 historical drama A Passage to India directed by David Lean and starring Judy David, Victor Banerjee, Peggy Ashcroft, James Fox and Alec Guiness. The album features the film’s complete original score composed and conducted by Maurice Jarre who previously worked with the director on Lawrence of Arabia, Doctor Zhivago and Ryan’s Daughter. The release includes more than 20 minutes of previously unreleased music, including many cues that were not used in the final cut of the movie. The composer was honored with his third Academy Award for his score in 1985 and the movie received ten more nominations. The music is performed by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. The label has also announced the world premiere soundtrack release for the 1970 adventure comedy The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes directed by Billy Wilder and starring Robert Stephens, Colin Blakely, Geneviève Page and Christopher Lee. The album features the film’s original music composed and conducted by Miklos Rosza (Ben Hur) and performed by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. The composer adapted his Violin Concerto, Op. 24, for the film and also composed a number of new themes for the MGM production. Rosza has previously scored Wilder’s features Five Graves to Cairo, The Lost Weekend and Double Indemnity. Audio clips can be checked out on the label’s website.
Quartet’s third new release is an expanded soundtrack album for the 1982 fantasy adventure The Beastmaster directed by Don Coscarelli and starring Marc Singer, Tanya Roberts and Rip Torn. The film’s music is composed and conducted by Lee Holdridge (Moonlighting, The Mists of Avalon) and recorded in Rome with members of the Orchestra of the Academy of Santa Cecilia and the Radio Symphony. The 2-CD set also includes music that was cut from the final film, as well as several alternate takes and compositions.
