Opening in theaters nationwide this weekend is the action horror movie Resident Evil co-written and directed by Zach Cregger and starring Austin Abrams, Zach Cherry, Kali Reis and Paul Walter Hauser. Also opening nationwide is the historical drama The Weight directed by Padraic McKinley and starring Ethan Hawke, Russell Crowe, Julia Jones, Avi Nash, Austin Amelio and Sam Hazeldine. The film’s original music is composed by Shelby Gaines & Latham Gaines (The Kid, Wildcat). No word yet on a soundtrack release. The movie, which is set in Oregon in 1933 and follows a man who is torn from his daughter and sent to a brutal work camp, where he gets tempted with early release if he smuggles gold through deadly wilderness, premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and is being released by Vertical.
Also opening wide is the biblical drama Daniel and the Fiery Furnace written and directed by Daniel & Matthew Kooman and starring Mena Massoud and Elijah Alexander. Tyler Michael Smith (90 Minutes in Heaven, Someone Like You, Karen Kingsbury: The Christmas Ring, Kirk Cameron: Connect,The World We Make) has composed the film’s original score. Opening semi-wide in around 350 theaters is the war drama Without Blood written and directed by Angelina Jolie and starring Salma Hayek Pinault, Demián Bichir and Juan Minujin. The film’s original music is composed by Rutger Hoedemaekers (Trapped, No Man’s Land, The Last Berliner). No soundtrack album has been released yet. The movie, which follow a woman who survived a war only to discover that her trauma fuels her quest for revenge years later against those who hurt her, premiered at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival and is being released by Brainstorm Entertainment.
Opening in around 300 theaters is the comedy Tiny Fugitives co-written and directed by Michael Lewen and starring Johnny Knoxville, Benjamin Pajak, Aaron Harris, Jai Soundar, Isa Steiner, Alyssa Gervasi, Blake Anderson and Jay Baruchel. Joseph Stephens (Eastbound & Down, The Righteous Gemstones, Observe and Report, Vice Principals, Upload, Never Have I Ever, The Sex Lives of College Girls, Flower) has composed the film’s original music. No word on a soundtrack release. The movie, which follows a reckless, fiercely determined group of twelve-year-olds who hatch a chaotic plot to escape reality and spend the rest of their lives at sleepaway camp, is being distributed by Inaugural Entertainment.
Also opening in a few hundred theaters is the comedy The Musical directed by Giselle Bonilla and starring Will Brill, Gillian Jacobs and Rob Lowe. The film’s original music is composed by Mateo Nossa. No soundtrack album has been announced yet. The movie, which revolves around a frustrated playwright and middle school theater teacher who finds out his ex-girlfriend has started dating his nemesis, the school’s principal, and decides to ruin the principal’s chances of winning the Blue Ribbon of Academic Excellence, premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and is being released by Blue Harbor Entertainment & Variance Films.
Opening in select U.S. theaters this weekend is the British satirical thriller Bad Apples directed by Jonatan Etzler and starring Saoirse Ronan, Eddie Waller, Sean Gilder, Kerry Howard, Nia Brown, Jacob Anderson, Robert Emms and Rakie Ayola.
