Mubi has announced that pianist and composer Marcin Masecki (Of Animals and Men, Blinded by the Lights) is set to reteam with director Pawel Pawlikowski (Ida, My Summer of Love) on the upcoming drama 1949. The film starring Sandra Hüller, Hanns Zischler, August Diehl, Devid Streisow, Anna Madeley & Theo Trebs explores the relationship between actress, journalist and rally driver Erika Mann and her father, German novelist Thomas Mann. The movie follows the duo as they embark on a road trip from U.S.-dominated Frankfurt to Soviet-controlled Weimar. Pawlikowski also co-wrote the screenplay with Henk Handloegten. Mario Gianani and Lorenzo Mieli (Queer, Maria) are producing the project for OUR Films, alongside Ewa Puszczynsk (The Zone of Interest) for Extreme Emotions, Jeanne Tremsal and Edward Berger (Conclave, All Quiet on the Western Front) for Nine Hours, Dimitri Rassam (The Count of Monte Cristo, Carmen) for Chapter2 and Lorenzo Gangarossa (There’s Still Tomorrow, Finally Dawn) for Circle One. Masecki has previously arranged the Joanna Kulig-performed songs in Pawlikowski’s 2018 feature Cold War and also composed the music for the filmmaker’s short Muse. 1949 is currently shooting in Poland, Germany and Italy and is expected to premiere next year.
