Aska Matsumiya (Bruised, After Yang, Betty, Skate Kitchen, Phoenix Rising, I’m Your Woman, Selah and the Spades) has recently scored the upcoming Roku Channel original series The Spiderwick Chronicles. The show is based on the bestselling novels by Tony DiTerlizzi & Holly Black (which have previously been adapted into a feature film scored by James Horner) and stars Joy Bryant, Christian Slater, Noah Cottrell, Mychala Lee, Lyon Daniels and Jack Dylan Grazer. The fantasy adventure follows the coming-of-age story of the Grace Family as they move from New York to Michigan and into their family’s ancestral home, where they uncover mysteries hidden inside their great grandfather’s estate and discover a secret, fantastical world around them. Aron Eli Coleite (Locke & Key, Daybreak) & Kat Coiro (Marry Me, Life Happens) serve as the project’s showrunners and are also executive producing the Paramount Television Studios & 20th Television production with DiTerlizzi, Black, Ellen Goldsmith-Vein (The Maze Runner, Kodachrome), Jeremy Bell & D.J. Goldberg (Percy Jackson and the Olympians), Julie Kane-Ritsch and Grace Gilroy (Zoo, Salvation). The Spiderwick Chronicles was originally set to to debut on Disney+ and will now premiere on April 19, 2024 on The Roku Channel.
Matsumiya’s other recent projects include Steve Buscemi’s The Listener, which premiered at the 2022 Venice Film Festival and has recently been picked up by Vertical Entertainment for a domestic release in select theaters and on VOD on March 29.
