Inspired by the show’s Mexican rainforest setting, Roe incorporated Aztec instruments such as ayoyote shells and ocarinas into the score. He also created custom instruments and sounds from airplane propellers and radio static.
“One of my favorite cues is ‘Nightbird,’ which we hear in the scene of the first murder. It’s the scene that sticks out to me most from when I read Anthony Horowitz’s brilliant script describing night falling on the jungle and all the creatures of the rainforest coming out to witness this first murder. So the music has an otherworldly feel to it, and a relentless pulse as the camera pushes through the jungle towards the scene of the crime. There are also lots of weird animal calls which we created from guitar squeaks, ocarinas and other weird and wonderful instruments. The pipe sound you hear is created from the sound of an airplane propeller.”
“The show is a brilliant mix of mystery, horror and dark comedy, with all the characters trapped in the Mexican rainforest not knowing who to trust. So the score had to be claustrophobic, casting doubt on all the characters and ramping up the tension when needed. But we know from the title these characters are going to die, so instead of becoming too doom-laden, I wanted the score to have a sense of fun and an oddness to keep the mystery and intrigue as the audience tries to work out ‘whodunnit’.”
