Mark Mothersbaugh (Thor: Ragnarok, The LEGO Movie, The Royal Tenenbaums, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, The Croods: A New Age, 21/22 Jump Street) has composed the original music for the upcoming documentary The World According to Allee Willis. The film is directed by Alexis Spraic (Shadow Billionaire) and centers songwriter/artist Allee Willis (known for co-writing such hits as Earth, Wind & Fire’s September, Pet Shop Boys’ & Dusty Springfield’s What Have I Done to Deserve This?, the Friends theme song I’ll Be There for You and the stage musical adaptation of The Color Purple) and focuses on her struggle with not fitting established gender and sexual norms. The movie features interviews with Mark Cuban (who also serves as an executive producer), Cyndi Lauper, Paul Reubens, Lily Tomlin,Michael Patrick King, Patti LaBelle, Paul Feig, Mothersbaugh himself, among others. Nicholas Coles is producing the Blackburn Pictures production. The World According to Allee Willis is premiering this week at the 2024 SXSW Film Festival.
Mothersbaugh is also expected to return to score the second season of National Geographic’s Disney+ documentary series A Real Bug’s Life and co-scored the sixth and final season of FX’s What We Do in the Shadows.
