This week, John Powell (How to Train Your Dragon, Solo: A Star Wars Story, The Bourne Identity, Shrek, United 93, Rio, X-Men: The Last Stand, Don’t Worry Darling, Happy Feet) is recording his score Netflix animated film Thelma the Unicorn. The movie directed by Lynn Wang (Unikitty!) & Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite, Nacho Libre) is based on Aaron Blabey’s children’s novel and follows a small-time pony who dreams of becoming a glamurous music star and – in a moment of fate – is transformed into a unicorn and instantly rises to global stardom. Pam Coats (Mulan, Scoob!) is producing the Netflix Animation production. Powell has announced his involvement on Instagram. Thelma the Unicorn will premiere in 2024 on Netflix.
Powell’s other upcoming projects include Locksmith Animation’s That Christmas! and Dean DeBlois’ live-action adaptation of How to Train Your Dragon. He also recently score Illumination Entertainment’s Migration, which will open in theaters on December 22.
