John Debney (The Passion of the Christ, The Jungle Book, Elf, Iron Man 2, Hocus Pocus, Cutthroat Island) is composing the original score for the upcoming animated feature The Garfield Movie. The film is directed by Mark Dindal and features the voices of Chris Pratt, Samuel L. Jackson, Hannah Waddingham, Nicholas Hoult, Ving Rhames, Cecily Strong, Brett Goldstein, Harvey Guillén and Bowen Yang. The animated comedy based on the characters created by Jim Davis follows the world-famous cat who – after an unexpected reunion with his long-lost father, scruffy street cat Vic – is forced his perfectly pampered life with canine friend Odie into joining Vic in a high-stakes heist. Paul A. Kaplan & Mark Torgove (The Late Bloomer) and David Reynolds (Finding Nemo) wrote the screenplay. Alcon Entertainment’s Andrew Kosove (The Blind Side, Prisoners) and Broderick Johnson (Blade Runner 2049, Dolphin Tale) are producing the project with John Cohen (The Angry Birds Movie, Despicable Me), Steven P. Wegner (Dolphin Tale 2), Craig Sost, Namit Malhotra and Crosby Clyse. Debney has previously scored Dindal’s last two features, The Emperor’s New Groove and Chicken Little. The Garfield Movie is set to be released on May 24, 2024 by Sony Pictures.
As previously reported, Debney’s other upcoming projects include Kevin Costner’s Horizon: An American Saga: Part 1 (to be released in theaters on June 28, 2024) and Part 2 (August 16, 2024).
It feels like half the time a new John Debney scoring assignment is announced, my first thought is “Well, there’s another project I wasn’t planning to financially support that will now get $9.99 from me when the soundtrack is released.”
For real, my boy deserves better movies
