Volker Bertelmann (All Quiet on the Western Front, Hotel Mumbai, Adrift, The Old Guard, Patrick Melrose) has composed the original music for the upcoming British biographical drama One Life. The film is directed by James Hawes (Slow Horses, Snowpiercer) and stars Anthony Hopkins, Johnny Flynn, Helena Bonham-Carter, Jonathan Pryce, Romola Garai, Lena Olin and Alex Sharp. The movie tells the story of Sir Nicholas Winton, a British stockbroker who helped rescue hundreds of children from Europe on the verge of the World War II, an act of compassion that was almost forgotten for fifty years. Lucinda Coxon (The Danish Girl, Wild Target) and Nick Drake (Romulus, My Father) wrote the screenplay based on Barbara Winton’s book If It’s Not Impossible… The Life of Sir Nicholas Winton. Iain Canning & Emile Sherman (The King’s Speech, The Power of the Dog) and Joanna Laurie (The Son, The Limhouse Golem) are producing the See-Saw Films production with Guy Heeley (Cyrano, Locke). Bertelmann has previously co-scored See-Saw’s features Lion (for which he received his first Academy Award nomination) and Ammonite. One Life will premiere in September at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival.
Bertelmann’s other recent projects include Marc Turtletaub’s Jules, which will be released in theaters on August 11, as well as the Black Mirror episode By the Sea, which just premiered last month.
