Terence Blanchard (BlacKkKlansman, Malcolm X, 25th Hour, Harriet, Da 5 Bloods, One Night in Miami…) is scoring the upcoming Apple TV+ documentary event series They Call Me Magic. The show is directed by Rick Famuyiwa (Dope, The Chi) and centers on the life and career of one of the world’s most iconic figures, Earvin “Magic” Johnson. The 4-parter explore Johnson’s journey from being the face of the Los Angeles Lakers and cementing himself as an all-time NBA legend, to changing the conversation around HIV and transforming into a successful entrepreneur and community activist. Famuyiwa is also executive producing the XTR and New Slate Ventures production with Bryn Mooser (You Cannot Kill David Arquette ), Rafael Marmor, Christina Arquette (12 Hour Shift, Ghost of the Ozarks), John Terzian and Jeremy Allen. They Call Me Magic will premiere on April 22, 2022 exclusively on Apple TV+.
Blanchard’s other upcoming projects also include Gina Prince-Bythewood’s The Woman King (to be released in theaters on September 16, 2022) and the second season of HBO’s Perry Mason.
