Composer Mark Mothersbaugh (The LEGO Movie, 21/22 Jump Street, The Royal Tenenbaums, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, Hotel Transylvania, The Mitchells vs. The Machines) is reuniting with writer/producer David Jenkins on the new HBO Max original series Our Flag Means Death. The show is created by Jenkins and stars Rhys Darby, Taika Waititi, Nathan Foad, Samson Kayo, Ewen Bremner, Vico Ortiz, Joel Fry, Kristian Nairn, Matthew Maher, Con O’Neill, David Fane, Guz Khan, Rory Kinnear, Nat Faxon, Samba Schutte, Fred Armisen and Leslie Jones. The comedy is based on the true adventures of 18th century would-be pirate, Stede Bonnet whose fortunes change after a fateful run-in with the infamous Captain Blackbeard. Jenkins serves as the showrunner and is producing the project with Garrett Basch (Devs, Those Who Wish Me Dead), Dan Halsted (Garden State, The Virgin Suicides), as well as Waititi (Jojo Rabbit, Thor: Love and Thunder) who also directed the pilot episode. Mothersbaugh has previously scored the Jenkins-created TBS series People of Earth and also collaborated with Waititi on the feature Thor: Ragnarok and the FX original series What We Do in the Shadows. Our Flag Means Death will premiere next Thursday, March 3 exclusively on HBO Max.
Mothersbaugh also continues to score What We Do in the Shadows, which will return for its fourth season later this year.
