Gustavo Santaolalla (Brokeback Mountain, Babel, The Book of Life,The Motorcycle Diaries) & Kevin Kiner (Star Wars: The Clone Wars & Rebels, CSI: Miami) are reuniting to co-score the new ABC drama Promised Land. The show is created by Matt Lopez (Race to Witch Mountain, The Sorcerer’s Apprentice) and stars John Ortiz, Cecilia Suárez, Christina Ochoa, Augusto Aguilera, Mariel Molino, Tonatiuh, Katya Martín, Andres Velez and Rolando Chusan. The series centers on a Latinx family vying for wealth and power in California’s Sonoma Valley. Lopez is also executive producing the ABC Signature production with Lit Entertainment Group’s Adam Kolbrenner (Free Guy, Prisoners), as well as Maggie Malina (Scream: The TV Series, Resort to Love) and Michael Cuesta (Homeland, Kill the Messenger) who also directed the pilot episode. As previously reported, Santaolalla has produced a cover version of I Heard It Through the Grapevine for the project, which was released as a digital single last month. Santaolalla & Kiner have previously co-scored Netflix’s Narcos: Mexico & The CW”s Jane the Virgin and also collaborated on the docu-series Making a Murderer. Promised Land will premiere on January 24 on ABC and will also be available to stream on Hulu.
Santaolalla’s other recent and upcoming projects include Netflix’s The House (premiering this Friday) and HBO’s The Last of Us TV series. Kiner also has the HBO Max series Peacemaker and new seasons of Titans & Doom Patrol (all co-scored with Clint Mansell), as well as the second season of Lucasfilm’s Star Wars: The Bad Batch and the third season of Showtime’s City on a Hill coming up.
