This week, Oli Julian (Sex Education, Catastrophe, Episodes, Plebs) is recording his score for the upcoming coming-of-age comedy How to Build a Girl. The film is directed by Coky Giedroyc (Harlots, The Hour) and stars Beanie Feldstein in the title role, alongside Emma Thompson, Chris O’Dowd, Alfie Allen, Paddy Considine and Sarah Solemani. The movie is based on Caitlin Moran’s best-selling book of the same title and follows a smart, opinionated and overweight 16-year-old girl who is desperate to get out of her hometown and make a name for herself and decides reinvent herself as Dolly Wilde, a rock music critic. Moran also wrote the screenplay with John Niven (Kill Your Friends). Alison Owen (Me Before You, Saving Mr. Banks) and Debra Hayward (Les Miserables, Mary Queen of Scots) are producing the Monumental Pictures production. How to Build a Girl is currently in post-production and is expected to premiere later this year.
Julian will also return to score the second season of Netflix’s Sex Education and also has the Channel 4/IFC series Year of the Rabbit written by Andy Riley & Kevin Cecil, and directed by Ben Taylor coming up. The show starring Matt Berry, Freddie Fox and Susan Wokoma centers on a drunk sleuth investigating crimes inspired by the world of Sherlock Holmes’ Victorian-era London. The comedy will premiere later this year.
