THR is reporting that songwriters Kate Anderson & Elyssa Samsel are teaming up with Josh Gad on a movie musical based on the American folk tale of Rip Van Winkle. Cynthia Erivo is attached to star in the film, which is based on the short story written by Washington Irving (The Legend of Sleepy Hollow) about a villager who falls asleep only to wake up decades later and missing the American Revolution. Amanda Idoko is writing the screenplay based on an idea by Gad who is also producing the project with Dan Lin (The LEGO Movie, It) and Jonathan Eirich (Aladdin). Anderson & Samsel have previously composed the original songs for Disney’s animated short Olaf’s Frozen Adventure, which starred Gad as the voice of the title character. Warner Bros. Pictures has picked up rights for Rip Van Winkle musical.
