Dustin O’Halloran has signed on to score the upcoming drama The Hate U Give. The film is directed by George Tillman Jr. (Men of Honor, Notorious, Faster) and stars Amandla Stenberg, Regina Hall, KJ Apa, Russell Hornsby, Algee Smith, Lamar Johnson and Common. The movie is based on Angela Thomas’ novel of the same name and centers on a 16-year-old girl who witnesses a police officer shoot her unarmed best friend and is torn between her two very different worlds as she tries to speak her truth. Audrey Wells (Under the Tuscan Sun, A Dog’s Purpose) has written the screenplay. Bob Teitel (Barbershop, Soul Food) and Marty Bowen (The Maze Runner, The Fault in Our Stars, Love, Simon) are producing the Fox 2000 production. The Hate U Give is expected to be released later this year by 20th Century Fox.
O’Halloran’s recent projects also include Marc Turtletaub’s drama Puzzle, which premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and will be released in theaters on July 13, 2018 by Sony Pictures Classics, as well as Alfonso Gomez-Rejon’s The Current War, which premiered at last year’s Toronto Film Festival and is currently awaiting a release date. The composer who is best known for his Academy Award-nominated music for Lion (co-scored by Hauschka) and his score for Amazon’s Transparent has also recently written music for the Sky Atlantic series Save Me.
