Broadcast Music, Inc. (BMI) announced today that James Newton Howard will be honored with the organization’s Icon Award for outstanding career achievement at this year’s BMI Film & Television Awards. The composer whose best known scoring credits include The Sixth Sense, The Hunger Games series, King Kong, Signs, Maleficent and The Dark Knight has received eight Academy Award nominations throughout his career for works including Defiance, The Village, The Fugitive, Michael Clayton, The Prince of Tides and My Best Friend’s Wedding. He also was honored with four Golden Globe and three Grammy nominations and won a Grammy for his music for The Dark Knight, which he co-wrote with Hans Zimmer. He also received an Emmy Award for his Gideon’s Crossing theme and was Emmy-nominated two more times. James Newton Howard follows previous BMI honorees including John Williams, Jerry Goldsmith, Alan Silvestri, Thomas Newman, Danny Elfman and John Barry. In addition, David Newman will receive the Classic Contribution Award for his advocacy of film music performances in concert halls, most notably through his work with the American Youth Symphony. The composer’s film scoring credits include War of the Roses, Matilda, Ice Age, Heathers, The Flintstones and his Academy Award-nominated music for Anastasia. The BMI Film & TV Awards will be hosted by BMI President & CEO Mike O’Neill and BMI Vice President, Film/TV Relations Doreen Ringer-Ross and will also honor the composers of the past year’s top-grossing films, top-rated primetime network television series and highest-ranking cable network programs. The event will take place on May 11, 2016 at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills.
