The only movie opening nationwide this weekend is the action sequel Furious 7 directed by James Wan and starring Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Dwayne Johnson, Jason Statham, Michelle Rodriguez, Jordana Brewster, Tyrese Gibson, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges and Kurt Russell. Opening in around 250 theaters is the drama Woman in Gold directed by Simon Curtis and starring Helen Mirren, Ryan Reynolds, Daniel Bruhl, Katie Holmes, Charles Dance, Elizabeth McGovern and Frances Fisher. The film’s original music is composed by Martin Phipps (Harry Brown, Brighton Rock) and Hans Zimmer (The Dark Knight, Gladiator, Inception). No soundtrack album has been announced. Woman in Gold follows an elderly Jewish woman who fled Vienna during WWII and, sixty years later, starts her journey to retrieve family possessions seized by the Nazis, among them Klimt’s painting “The Lady in Gold”. Opening in around 200 theaters is the period drama Effie Gray directed by Richard Laxton and starring Dakota Fanning, Emma Thompson, Julie Walters, Tom Sturridge, Robbie Coltrane, Claudia Cardinale, Derek Jacobi, David Suchet, James Fox and Linda Bassett. Paul Cantelon (The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, Conviction, Everything Is Illuminated) has composed the film’s original music. Opening in select cities is the thriller Cut Bank directed by Matt Shakman and starring Liam Hemsworth, John Malkovich, Billy Bob Thornton, Bruce Dern, Michael Stuhlbarg, Teresa Palmer and Oliver Platt. The film’s original music is composed by James Newton Howard (The Hunger Games, King Kong, Maleficent, The Sixth Sense). No word on a soundtrack release. Cut Bank follows a former-athlete-turned-auto-mechanic who dreams of getting out of Cut Bank, Montana, but his efforts to do so set in motion a deadly series of events. The movie premiered at last year’s Los Angeles Film Festival and was picked up by A24 and DirecTV for domestic distribution. Also opening in select theaters is the drama Boychoir directed by François Girard and starring Dustin Hoffman, Kathy Bates, Josh Lucas, Kevin McHale, Eddie Izzard, Debra Winger and Garrett Wareing. Brian Byrne (Albert Nobbs, The Good Doctor) has composed the film’s original score. Reprise Records has released a soundtrack album featuring selections from the composer’s score, the original song The Mysteries Of Your Gift performed by Josh Groban and the movie’s choral music performed by the American Boychoir. Another limited release this week is the romantic drama 5 to 7 written and directed by Victor Levin and starring Anthon Yelchin, Bérénice Marlohe, Olivia Thirlby, Lambert Wilson, Frank Langella and Glenn Close. The film’s original music is composed by Saunder Jurriaans and Danny Bensi (Martha Marcy May Marlene, Enemy, The One I Love). No soundtrack album has been announced. 5 to 7 follows an aspiring novelist who has a cinq-a-sept affair with the beautiful wife of a French diplomat. The movie premiered at last year’s Tribeca Film Festival and was picked up by IFC Films for domestic distribution. Also opening in limited release is the action adventure Last Knights directed by Kazuaki Kiriya and starring Clive Owen, Morgan Freeman, Cliff Curtis, Aksel Hennie, Payman Maadi, Ayelet Zurer, Shohreh Aghdashloo and Sung Ki Ahn. Percussionist Satnam Ramgotra and cellist Martin Tillman (The Ring Two) have composed the film’s original music. No word on a soundtrack release. Last Knights follows a fallen warrior who rises against a corrupt and sadistic ruler to avenge his dishonored master. The movie is being released by Lionsgate and is also available on VOD.
Also opening in select cities is the indie comedy Ned Rifle written, directed and produced by Hal Hartley and starring Liam Aiken, Aubrey Plaza, Martin Donovan, Parker Posey, Thomas Jay Ryan and James Urbaniak.
