David Newman is composing the music for the upcoming drama Ruth & Alex. The movie is directed by Richard Loncraine and stars Morgan Freeman, Diane Keaton, Michael Cristofer, Cynthia Nixon, Claire Vanderboom, Korey Jackson, Carrie Preston, Sterling Jerins, Josh Pais and Miriam Shor. The film follows a long-married couple during an eventful weekend after they are forced to contemplate selling their beloved Brooklyn apartment. Charlie Peters (Three Men and a Little Lady, My Father the Hero) has written the screenplay based on a novel by Jill Cement. Charlie Peters is also producing the project with Lori McCreary (Invictus, The Magic of Belle Isle), Curtis Burch (Words and Pictures) and Tracy Mercer (Madam Secretary). Loncraine has previously collaborated with such composers as Alexandre Desplat (Firewall, The Special Relationship), Trevor Jones (Richard III), Ed Shearmur (Wimbledon) and Mark Isham (My One and Only). Ruth & Alex will premiere next month at the Toronto International Film Festival.
Newman’s recent projects include the animated feature Tarzan and the comedy Behaving Badly. The Academy Award-nominated composer is best known for his work on such films as Ice Age, Anastasia, Heathers, The War of the Roses and Serenity.
