The only movie to open wide this weekend is the drama Out of the Furnace co-written and directed by Scott Cooper and starring Christian Bale, Woody Harrelson, Casey Affleck, Forest Whitaker, Willem Dafoe, Zoe Saldana and Sam Shepard. The film’s original score is composed by Dickon Hinchliffe (Winter’s Tale, Last Chance Harvey). Opening in limited release is the drama Inside Llewyn Davis directed by Joel and Ethan Coen and starring Oscar Isaac, Carey Mulligan, John Goodman, Garrett Hedlund and Justin Timberlake. Nonesuch Records has released a soundtrack album produced by T Bone Burnett and the Coen Brothers, which features 12 new recordings made for the film performed by the movie’s cast, an existing recording by Dave Van Ronk, as well as a previously unreleased version of the song Farewell by Bob Dylan. Also opening in select theaters is the romantic drama Twice Born directed by Sergio Castellitto, based on the bestseller by Margaret Mazzantin and starring Penélope Cruz and Emile Hirsch. The film’s original score is composed by Penelope’s brother Eduardo Cruz No word on a soundtrack release. Visit the composer’s YouTube channel to listen to several tracks from the score. Twice Born follows an Italian professor who heads off on a summer vacation to Sarajevo with her discontented teenaged to show him the country where she fell passionately in love with his father. Another limited release is the sci-fi thriller The Last Days on Mars directed by Ruairi Robinson and starring Liev Schreiber, Romola Garai, Elias Koteas, Olivia Williams, Johnny Harris, Goran Kostic and Tom Cullen. The film’s original music is composed by Max Richter (Disconnect, Waltz with Bashir). Metropolis Movie Music has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s music. Opening in Los Angeles this weekend before expanding to more cities is the indie comedy Expecting written and directed by Jessie McCormack and starring Michelle Monaghan, Radha Mitchell, Jon Dore, Michael Weston and Mimi Kennedy. Mark Kilian (Tsotsi, Traitor, Pitch Perfect) has composed the film’s original score. Lakeshore Records will release a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s music on December 17. Also opening in limited release is the animated feature Khumba directed by Anthony Silverston and featuring the voices of Jake T. Austin, Laurence Fishburne, Annasophia Robb, Liam Neeson and Steve Buscemi. Bruce Retief who previously scored last year’s Zambezia for Triggerfish Animation Studio has composed the movie’s original score.
