Only one movie is opening nationwide this weekend:
Expected to top the weekend box office is the sci-fi sequel Star Trek Into Darkness directed by J.J. Abrams and starring Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg, Anton Yelchin, John Cho, Bruce Greenwood, Benedict Cumberbatch and Peter Weller. The film’s music is composed by Abrams’ regular musical collaborator Michael Giacchino (Up, Lost). A soundtrack album featuring the composer’s music is now available digitally from Varese Sarabande and will be released on CD next week. Opening in limited release is the indie comedy drama Frances Ha co-written and directed by Noah Baumbach and starring Greta Gerwig, Mickey Sumner, Adam Driver and Michael Zegen. ABKCO Records will release a soundtrack album featuring four tracks from classic film scores by composer Georges Delerue, Paul McCartney’s Blue Sway, David Bowie’s Modern Love, T. Rex’s Chrome Sitar and more next week. Also included is a track by Dean Wareham and Britta Phillips who scored Baumbach’s The Squid and the Whale. Also opening in select cities is the indie thriller Black Rock written by Mark Duplass, directed by Katie Aselton and starring herself, Lake Bell, Kate Bosworth, Will Bouvier, Jay Paulson and Anslem Richardson. The film’s original score is composed by Ben Lovett (Sun Don’t Shine). The composer’s label has released a soundtrack album featuring the score today. Another limited release this week is the action thriller Erased directed by Phillip Stolzl and starring Aaron Eckhart, Olga Kurylenko, Liana Liberato. The film’s score is composed by Jeff Danna (The Boondock Saints, Silent Hill). Pale Blue Records released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score last fall in the UK where the film was released under its original title The Expatriate. The film about an ex-CIA agent who discovers that he and his daughter have been marked for termination as part of a wide-reaching international conspiracy is being released by the Weinstein Company’s Radius label and is now also available on VOD.
Also opening in limited release is the romantic comedy The English Teacher directed by Craig Zisk and starring Julianne Moore, Greg Kinnear, Nathan Lane, Michael Angarano, Lily Collins and Nikki Blonsky. Rob Simonsen (500 Days of Summer, The Way, Way Back) has composed the film’s original score. No soundtrack album has been announced. The movie follows a 40-year-old unmarried high school English teacher in the small town of Kingston, PA whose life turns an unexpected page when a former student returns home after trying to make it as a playwright in New York. The comedy premiered at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival and is being released by Cinedigm. Click here to watch the film’s trailer.
