This weekend, Film Music Reporter launches a new weekly article series covering music for new TV shows, as well as made-for-television movies and mini-series premiering in the following or previous week. The articles will be published every Sunday.
Earlier this past week, the Cartoon Network premiered Dreamworks Animation’s Dragons: Riders of Berk based on the Academy Award-nominated hit film How to Train Your Dragon. The show’s voice talent includes the cast from the movie, including Jay Baruchel, America Ferrera, Christopher Mintz-Plasse and T. J. Miller. John Paesano (Ice Age: A Mammoth Christmas) is composing the series’ music and is incorporating John Powell’s themes from the feature version into his score. The first episode is available to download for free on iTunes and the show airs every Tuesday night on the Cartoon Network. Premiering on Tuesday, September 11 is the comedy Go On created by Scott Silveri (Friends) starring Matthew Perry, Laura Benanti, Julie White, Suzy Nakamura, Tyler James Williams, Brett Gelman and John Cho. John Swihart whose other TV credits include such shows as How I Met Your Mother, Switched at Birth and Greek is composing the score for the series. The show about a recent widower and sports talk radio host who gets back to work after the loss of his wife will be airing every Tuesday night on NBC. Also premiering this Tuesday is the comedy The New Normal created by Ryan Murphy & Ali Adler and starring Justin Bartha, Andrew Rannells, Georgia King, NeNe Leakes, Bebe Wood and Ellen Barkin. The show’s musical score is composed and produced by James S. Levine who is best known for his work on such shows as Glee, Nip/Tuck, The Closer, American Horror Story and Damages. PJ Bloom (Glee, Nip/Tuck) is the comedy’s supervisor. Premiering in the US this Monday on Starz Encore is the mini-series The Crimson Petal and the White directed by Marc Munden and based on Michel Faber’s novel set in Victorian London. The series’ cast includes Romola Garai, Chris O’Dowd, Shirley Henderson, Richard E. Grant and Gillian Anderson. Lucinda Coxon (Wild Target) has written the screenplay for the BBC production, which premiered in the UK last year and received two BAFTA Television Awards nominations.
