According to a recent article in Variety, Michael Giacchino has started working on Pixar’s animation sequel Cars 2. Giacchino follows the footsteps of Randy Newman, who scored the first part back in 2006. In the sequel directed by Brad Lewis and John Lassetter, racing star Lightning McQueen teams up with his best friend Mater for an international adventure as they go up against the world’s fastest car. Most of the voice talent of the first movie is expected to return. Cars 2, which marks Giacchino’s third Pixar project after The Incredibles, Ratatouille and Up is slated to come out on June 24, 2011.
Giacchino also is slated to score the upcoming comedy Monte Carlo. In the movie starring Selena Gomez, Corie Monteith, Katie Cassidy, Leighton Meester and Andie MacDowell, three young women vacationing in Paris find themselves whisked away to Monte Carlo after one of the girls is mistaken for a British heiress. The movie is directed by Thomas Bezucha who collaborated with Giacchino on the dramedy The Family Stone. The Fox 2000 is movie is scheduled for a February 11, 2011 release.
Giacchino also has been hired to score the upcoming comedy drama I’m With Cancer (aka Live With It) [MARCH 2011 UPDATE: The film has been retitled again to 50/50). The movie is being described as a comedic account of a 25-year-old guy’s cancer diagnosis, and his subsequent struggle to beat the disease. The movie directed by Jonathan Levine (The Wackness) stars Seth Rogen, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Anna Kendrick and Bryce Dallas Howard. No release has been set for the Summit Entertainment movie, but it is expected to come out next year.
As previously reported, Giacchino is also on board J.J. Abrams Super 8, the Sony Pictures Animation Arthur Christmas, Brad Bird’s Mission Impossible 4, as well as Andrew Stanton’s John Carter of Mars.
